Job search

Where the jobs actually are (it's not just the big job boards)

If you only search one big job site, you are seeing part of the market. Employers post on their own career pages, on sector and regional boards, on public employment portals and through recruiters, and not every vacancy travels to every site. A search that works covers more sources and runs every few days.

A map of job sources around you: a few big job boards and many smaller company career pages, sector boards and public portals, most holding vacancies.

Key takeaways

  • Job postings are spread across big boards, company career pages, sector boards, regional boards and public job portals.
  • Company career pages often have the vacancy first, and some vacancies never leave them.
  • Checking regularly matters: early applicants are usually read while the recruiter is still actively reviewing.
  • Beware of "80% of jobs are hidden" claims; there is no solid source. Wider searching is still worth it.

The map of job sources

Vacancies are spread across five kinds of sources, and each one shows a different slice of the market.

  • 01
    Big job boards

LinkedIn, Indeed, StepStone and similar. Wide reach, lots of competition, many reposts from agencies.

  • 02
    Company career pages

The employer's own site, often run on an ATS such as Workday, Greenhouse or Personio. Usually the most accurate and up to date.

  • 03
    Sector boards

Boards for healthcare, logistics, engineering, public sector and so on. Fewer ads, far more relevant ones.

  • 04
    Regional boards and papers

Local employers who never post nationally, especially in trades, care and retail.

  • 05
    Public job portals

In Germany the Bundesagentur für Arbeit's Jobsuche; across the EU the EURES portal for jobs in other member states.

Is there really a "hidden job market"?

Some roles are filled through referrals or internal moves before they are posted, but the popular "70-80% of jobs are never advertised" figure has no reliable source.

Myth

80% of jobs are never advertised.

What is actually true

This is repeated in countless articles, and none of them points to a study that measured it. What is true: referrals and internal candidates fill some roles quietly, and roles posted only on company career pages are easy to miss.

The practical answer is the same either way. Tell people you are looking, and search more places than one.

Why timing matters

Applying within the first few days of a posting usually helps, because recruiters review while applications arrive and often start interviewing before the ad closes.

Many employers review on a rolling basis. By the time an ad has been up for three weeks, the shortlist may already exist. That is why checking once a week is not enough in busy fields, and why alerts beat browsing.

Common questions

Which job sites should I use?
Use at least one big board, one board specific to your sector or region, and the careers pages of employers you want to work for. In Germany, add the Bundesagentur für Arbeit Jobsuche; for jobs in other EU countries, EURES.
Is it better to apply on the company website or on the job board?
If both are possible, the company's own careers page is usually the most direct route, since it goes straight into their ATS and shows the current version of the ad.
How often should I check for new jobs?
In active fields, every day or two, or use alerts. Early applications tend to be read while the recruiter is still reviewing, before a shortlist forms.
